I grew up in a family where St. Patrick's Day was loved and celebrated. Suffice it to say that "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" and "Oh, Danny Boy" were frequently playing in our house near the middle of March. And we were known to have a old-fashioned singalong of Irish tunes in grammar school, as well...
As a result, for me there is still something stirring and special about this day. And it moves beyond family heritage and folklore. It seems a harbinger of Spring, ushering in the tender greens of the new season, and promising that Easter is but a moment away.
Heart dies and die-cutting machine. (You can cut your own hearts if you do not have dies.)
Approximately 3" x 5" piece of chipboard.
Small amount green glitter of choice. I used German Glass Glitter, but any glitter in a shamrock-y color will do.
8" piece of heavy floral wire, very small round dowel, or even a wooden meat skewer.
Ribbon or seam binding to wrap wand and to tie to the top.
17" piece of metallic silver embroidery floss. (Optional)
Silver metallic paint and small paintbrush.
Hot glue gun.
White glue for applying glitter.
Pony bead with a hole large enough to fit the wand.
Paint the front and back with metallic craft paint. Either gold or silver will work well to provide a shiny undercoat to the glitter.
If desired, tie on 17" of metallic embroidery floss or thread, separated into strands.
I leave you with this Irish Blessing, one of my father's favorites:
May you always have:
Walls for the winds,
A roof for the rain,
Tea beside the fire,
Laughter to cheer you,
Those you love near you,
And all that your heart might desire...
Happy St. Patrick's Day!! xoxo
